The supply of LNG to ships is a commitment of the Port Authority of Almería (APA), in its bet to sustainable development and respect for the environment. This is because LNG is a cleaner and more efficient fuel, since it reduces the emissions of ships into the atmosphere, both during the trip, and during their stay in the Port.
In November 2020, the first LNG bunkering operation took place on a ship docked in the Port of Almería. It was Baleària’s ferry Bahama Mama that refueled its tanks with this sustainable fuel. Since then, several vessels of this shipping company have refueled at the Almeria dock, which has adapted its facilities to supply LNG with tank trucks.
Recently, a bunkering operation was carried out on the Baleària’s ship Nápoles, which covers services between Almería and the ports of Melilla and Nador. Bunkering was carried out with a tanker truck from ESK (company specialized in the transport and supply of LNG) in approximately 60 minutes, and in compliance with strict security measures. The shipping company and APA staff collaborated in the operation.
Multi-truck-to-ship LNG bunkering operations are also carried out in the Port of Almería, a method in which two or more tanker trucks are involved, which considerably reduces refueling time.
In order to carry out LNG bunkering at the Port, the APA carried out two previous studies on the technical and safety assessment of the service, and subsequently undertook some work to adapt the docks to carry out bunkering.
