The Galicia-based LNG terminal has increased its versatility thanks to the modernization works carried out on its dock, works that have just been completed. From now on, the Mugardos (A Coruña) plant will be able to operate not only large and medium methane tankers, but all types of vessels, even the smallest on the market.
Thanks to its competitiveness and environmental advantages, LNG has advanced positions in recent years among fuels for maritime transport. In order for it to continue to do so, European legislation prescribes the creation of a sufficient network of LNG supply points in ports.
The Mugardos regasification plant will now form part of this network, where a flexible cryogenic hose system has been installed for operation with small-scale vessels, such as supply barges for large ships. This new LNG loading and unloading system joins the four fixed arms that the terminal’s jetty already had.
This action is part of the adaptation and modernization program of the plant, and will pave the way to develop a benchmark LNG hub in the northwest of the peninsula. Reganosa has invested 5.2 million euros in it.
Reganosa wants to continue modernizing the Mugardos terminal. The company expects to soon incorporate a state-of-the-art compression system into the complex that maximizes the use of energy and allows all types of logistics services to be provided at any time. It plans to allocate 16 million euros to this, which will result in average annual savings of 26 to 40 GWh and in comprehensive management of the vapors generated in the LNG storage tanks.
