There are more and more refueling facilities for natural gas vehicles in the country. According to the consulting firm Macroconsult, as of July this year there are 335 active CNG service stations in Peru that allow natural gas from Camisea to be brought to eight regions, reported Agencia Andina.
With 290 filling stations, Lima concentrates 87% of the active CNG points of sale in the country, followed by Ica with 19, Callao with 15, Piura with three, Áncash, Cusco and La Libertad with two each. In addition, Junín and Lambayeque each have a natural gas station.
According to Infogas data, more than 324,000 vehicles using natural gas from Camisea were counted throughout the country at the end of 2021. Macroconsult reported that, since 2004, drivers, mostly of light cars, benefited from savings of more than USD 11,500 million for the substitution of gasoline for natural gas.
The use of natural gas from Camisea offers significant savings in fuel costs for drivers of light vehicles, which can reach 70% and 35% compared to gasoline and LPG, respectively, according to a study by Macroconsult with retail prices closing June 2022.
Macroconsult explained that, even if the cost of converting vehicles to CNG is considered, financed in 24 monthly installments, the savings for the use of this fuel would be 63% and 20% compared to gasoline and LPG, respectively.
