The energy transition in Argentina is supported by the test of CNG in transport trucks and public buses, but according to specialists there is a lack of refueling corridors and investments to develop all the available potential.
As stated at the 2nd Sustainable Transport Forum organized by Scania Argentina, the country “has the resources to develop the transition to cleaner fuels, but there is a lack of savings capacity to carry out the works that guarantee the development that is needed,” said the former Undersecretary of Fuels Cristian Folgar. He also stressed that “genuine financial resources are needed, because the resources, as is the case of Vaca Muerta, are there.”
Within the framework of the panel “The Gas Route: the Latin American model of energy transition”, Lorena Bulacios, Vice President of the Women’s Association of Sustainable Energies, pointed out that it is “very necessary to build the Néstor Kirchner Gas Pipeline, but to take advantage of the opportunities generated by the CNG, a synergy between the public and private sectors is needed.” And she added: “Natural gas is the least polluting fossil fuel. It is a more eco-friendly fuel in the scenario of caring for the ozone layer.”
She also specified that CNG is “is a proven fuel. It is proposed as a means of transition to achieve sustainable mobility.” In addition, she said that there are currently around 300 trucks along Argentinean routes that run on natural gas.
Regarding public transport, it was noted that there were tests of CNG-powered buses in the City of Buenos Aires in 2019 and that the balance was “positive”, but they could not be completed due to the start of the pandemic.
