IVECO has a long history of research and development into new propulsion energies. Currently, it deepens its focus on the manufacture of vehicles powered by renewable energy for the development of transportation that is increasingly friendly to the environment and people.
In Argentina, IVECO became the first automaker to obtain approval for the local manufacturing of natural gas trucks. Thus, in 2019, the Natural Power range was born to nuclear these vehicles powered by alternative fuels. Shortly after, in 2020, production of the Tector CNG began in the company’s factory in Córdoba. It is the best-selling truck in the country in its CNG version.
“IVECO is an innovative brand by nature and the creation of Natural Power is a small example of this. The range had significant growth in recent years, not only in relation to the incorporation of new equipment to the line but also to the reception by transporters, which translates into greater circulation of vehicles on the country’s streets and routes to achieve increasingly sustainable mobility. We are very satisfied with this evolution and convinced of the importance of continuing along this path,” said Francisco Spasaro, Sales and Marketing Director of IVECO Argentina.
In 2022, IVECO BUS presented the 170G21 chassis and announced its manufacturing in Córdoba, becoming the first CNG bus produced in the country. The vehicle is already traveling the streets of Argentina participating in different types of tests both for private clients and in municipalities that seek to mitigate the negative effects of climate change, reduce noise and improve operation. On the other hand, some units are already in the export process and, in a short time, we will see them in various countries in the region.
With a view to creating new multi-energy solutions for the transportation of cargo and passengers, IVECO is advancing in the presentation of the S-Way CNG project. This vehicle thus becomes one of the first heavy natural gas truck in the region.
The IVECO S-Way is committed to sustainability and advances on the path of decarbonization by introducing product features that reduce its CO2 emissions and improve fuel efficiency, making the IVECO S-WAY CNG a sustainable friend of the environment and a sustainable leader in long-distance transportation. The truck in its diesel version is currently manufactured in Brazil and work is already underway to add the CNG version to the Sete Lagoas plant. Marketing is expected to begin in mid-2024.
S-WAY CNG maximizes the advantages of a more environmentally friendly fuel to improve air quality -reducing the level of particles and NOx emissions-, and contribute to creating a quieter environment with only 71dB(A) (Piek Quiet Truck) when working in this mode.
This truck can also run on biomethane, a renewable energy that generates the lowest carbon footprint according to Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), reducing CO2 by up to 95%. This fuel can be produced locally from agricultural and urban waste, which means additional income for farmers and local jobs. In this way, it represents the possibility of creating a circular economy that minimizes the use of new resources, the generation of waste and carbon emissions, and may even achieve negative greenhouse gas emissions.
“IVECO is a company with factories in the main markets of the world and this, without a doubt, gives us the possibility of working on the manufacture of a series of vehicles designed to satisfy the needs of each client, with energies available according to the prevailing energy matrix of each country. That is why we talk about multi-energy solutions, with products powered by diesel, gas (CNG/LNG, biomethane) and electricity (batteries and fuel cells), adaptable to various regions. We believe that the future is there,” Spasaro added.
