Committed to the environment, the transport company HAVI joined the SBT (Science Based Target) initiative together with more than 3,000 multinationals to achieve sustainable development and lead the way towards a decarbonized economy with the aim of limiting the increase in global temperature to 2º by reducing the equivalent carbon footprint of its logistics by 40% by 2030 compared to what they generated in 2015.
Since transport is responsible for 85% of the total CO2 emitted per ton distributed, in 2016 HAVI began to incorporate natural gas trucks into its delivery fleet, at its distribution center in Barcelona and with the collaboration of HAM for the supply of the fuel.
Now, together with HAM and hand in hand with Scania, HAVI is encouraging the use and consumption of biomethane in its trucks, in another clear commitment to the decarbonization and development of this green energy, obtained from biogas.
Also for Scania, manufacturer of HAVI’s natural gas trucks, the decarbonization of transport is the central axis of its strategy. One of the technologies with the greatest decarbonization potential that the Swedish manufacturer has within its range are trucks that can run on biomethane. Scania recently expanded its range, both bio-CNG and bio-LNG, which represents a substantial improvement in driving range. Biomethane trucks are a key part of its SBT objectives, with which it commits to reducing CO2 emissions from its products by 20% between 2015 and 2025.
In Europe there are more than 400 biomethane production plants and, although in Spain they are still far from those figures, there is enormous potential to use this biofuel. For this reason, Scania promotes and supports initiatives such as this collaboration with HAVI and HAM, for the use of biomethane in real cases of transport. It is necessary to put these types of real operations into practice to demonstrate the viability of these sustainable transport options.
HAVI shares this path towards decarbonization with its main clients, such as McDonald’s, with which it maintains a firm commitment to environmental sustainability. Now, its commitment to biomethane in the fleet intended for the transport of its products has already begun in Barcelona, and will gradually be extended to the rest of the trucks throughout the country.
HAVI has committed to the consumption of 150,000kg of biogas in the next 4 years for the center of Barcelona, which represents a saving of 7,500 tons of CO2 equivalent. Additionally, they are studying the expansion to another 300,000kg by extending it to the fleet of natural gas trucks in the rest of the territory.
