The renewable energy generated from organic waste in the Valdemingómez Technology Park will serve to move one of the municipal bus lines that runs on CNG. The Environment and Mobility Delegate Borja Carabante presented the initiative resulting from the agreement between the Madrid Municipal Transport Company (EMT) and the Environment and Mobility Area through the Valdemingómez Technology Park.
Based on this agreement, and with the participation of PreZero, the company in charge of managing the Biogas Treatment Plant (PTB) in which biomethane is produced, as well as the marketer Axpo, the energy generated from Madrid waste organic will be used to supply at least 6 Gwh of biomethane to EMT’s CNG buses in one year. This volume would serve to annually supply a line with a provision of about 20 vehicles, that is, operational characteristics similar to the C1 circular line, one of the most powerful of the entire municipal network with more than 1 million kilometers covered in 2021.
The agreement has an initial duration until December 31, 2023 and may be extended for annual periods up to a maximum of four years. This also establishes the provision of support between both organizations, as well as the exchange of information and experience in the field of collaboration and coordination in communication actions for the dissemination of the project and the promotion of renewable energies.
Thanks to its innovative and sustainable nature, the project has received a subsidy of 285,000 euros from the Madrid Business Forum, the public-private platform for the development of business projects in the capital city.
Decarbonisation and the adoption of a sustainable energy model to continue offering efficient transport, as has been done to date, is one of the four corporate objectives established in the current EMT Strategic Plan. This document is the roadmap that will mark the course of the company between now and 2025 and entails a historic investment by the Madrid City Council – more than 1,000 million euros – to undertake a true technological transformation of the municipal company.
In addition to the commitment to accomplish a green and decarbonized organization with a sustainable energy model, this strategic plan is aimed at achieving a customer-oriented company based on excellence, financially sustainable and deeply innovative in technology, all objectives aligned with the Madrid 360 Environmental Sustainability Strategy.
With this boost to the circular economy, within the Madrid 360 Environmental Sustainability Strategy, the City Council intends to promote the use of renewable energy generated by Madrid’s waste in the Valdemingómez Technology Park, reduce emissions associated with mobility and make of Madrid a city committed to sustainability.
