The registration of new natural gas vehicles continues to grow in the Colombian market. According to a report by NATURGAS and FENALCO (National Federation of Colombian Traders), this segment grew by 533% last January compared to the same period of 2022, driven especially by cargo vehicles, of which 133 units were sold. Of this total, 88% corresponds to tractor-trailers, 9.0% to trucks and 3% to buses.
“The challenge is enormous, but more and more Colombians are looking at the value offer of CNG vehicles,” said Eduardo Visbal, Vice President of Foreign Trade at FENALCO, who assured that citizens are increasingly committed to contributing to mobility decarbonization, improving air quality and mitigating the effect of climate change.
The CNG vehicle brands with the highest number of registrations in January were: Scania, FAW, Shacman, Sinotruk and Dongfeng, with market shares in the order of 42.9%, 32.3%, 15.0%, 6.0% and 3.0% representing 90.2% of the total number of dedicated CNG vehicles registered in the first month of the year.
On the other hand, during January 2023, sales of hybrid and electric vehicles showed a decrease of 6.0% and 55.2%, respectively, compared to January 2022. The sale of gasoline vehicles also decreased, presenting a decrease of 33.4%. “Clearly these categories have been affected by the decrease in household consumption, the high interest rates and the price of the dollar, among other variables,” commented Visbal.
