The Governor of Mendoza Rodolfo Suarez presented the 20 new vehicles powered by 100% CNG that are joining the fleet of the Mendoza Transportation Company (STM). The Scania buses, with Marcopolo bodywork, pollute 50% less and also reduce noise by more than 50%. Some of its features include specific areas for the disabled, capacity for 31 seated passengers and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
“The addition of these new units is part of a process that began in 2020, in the midst of a pandemic, with the aim of moving forward with Mendoza’s public policies, which have to do with sustainable, environmentally friendly transportation. This transition to leave behind the carbon is something that seems not to be the Mendoza political agenda, that we have other urgencies or emergencies, but we are also dedicated to thinking about future generations, because the world is heading towards a world of cities, more and more people live in cities and more and more people need public transportation,” said Suarez.
Regarding the testing period of the natural gas buses, Mendoza’s Secretary of Public Services, Natalio Mema, mentioned: “They are units that pollute 50% less. The energy factor stands out, since Mendoza and Neuquén are large gas producers that can be used in public transport. This is the second activity that consumes the most energy in the country, CNG as vehicle fuel, which is a pending matter in energy and environment.”
Moreover, the President of the STM Daniel Vilches highlighted the importance of this incorporation, which has the objective of consolidating the idea of promoting the provincial government in relation to environmental protection and improving the user experience. The official recalled that in 2018 the Government of Mendoza incorporated a fleet of 18 zero-emission vehicles, the first to be deployed in the country.
