The World Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 27) is being held for the first time in Egypt, on 6-18 November, in Sharm El-Sheikh City. Coping with the COP27 objectives, strenuous efforts have been made by the Egyptian government and governor of Sharm El-Sheikh to turn it to a greener and sustainable city.
GASTEC, the major CNG company in Egypt affiliated to the country’s Ministry of Petroleum, has largely contributed to develop the NGV infrastructure in Sharm El-Sheikh. It opened and operates five CNG stations in the city in order to avail the required fueling services to the fleets provided by operators and the city municipality as well as the private cars and taxies during the Conference.
To boost the natural gas fueling facilities in Sharm El-Sheikh, GASTEC has also provided the city with a mobile station, the first of its kind in Egypt and Middle East. An additional mega CNG station by the company in Nabq (near Sharm El-Sheikh) is still underway.
Earlier this year a breakthrough was accomplished by operating the largest CNG fueling facility in the region (Gastec “Saed El-Shazely” CNG Station) located in Cairo to cope with the growing demands on CNG in Egypt, expanding its network to reach 313 stations countrywide.
On the other hand, GASTEC has converted over 1,000 vehicles in Sharm El-Sheikh standing for 70% of the CNG-powered vehicles in the city while the remaining vehicles were transformed by Cargas (20%) and Mastegas (10%). Furthermore, a mobile vehicle conversion and maintenance center was developed and introduced by the company to offer these services to fleets in various districts.
Since its inception in mid 1990s, GASTEC managed to convert over 220,000 vehicles to run on natural gas that positively impacted on preserving the environment and reducing the harmful emissions of CO2 by 1.4 million ton and CO by 56.000 tons.
