Ambipar – a leading Brazilian multinational in environmental management – takes an important step in the fight against climate change and in fulfilling its decade-long ambition to lead the transition to a low-carbon, circular economy. The Sustainable Corridor Project begins the shift in the energy matrix of its fleet to renewable and cleaner sources, with the large-scale inclusion of CNG-powered trucks. With the arrival of the new vehicles, the company is positioned as a transforming agent in the logistics segment in the country with more sustainable solutions.
The Sustainable Corridor Project is an action by Ambipar that brings safe and intelligent mobility to chemical products transport operations for Dow. The initiative is in line with the companies’ ESG strategies and the objective of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in their operations. With the structuring of a route operated with the majority use of CNG, Ambipar contributes to the decarbonization of its activities and its customers and demonstrates to the market and society alternatives so that the Brazilian logistics segment can implement an energy transition that, by taking advantage of characteristics and national energy options, be able to reduce emissions in the sector more quickly.
With an estimated initial investment of R$ 30 million, Ambipar integrates trucks with technology for the use of natural gas, model Scania R 410 6X2 to its fleet. In the first year of circulation of the new trucks, Ambipar estimates a 20% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions in the Corridor.
“We want to increasingly expand our ESG agenda and the Sustainable Corridor comes to strengthen this purpose. We do have a strong goal, which is to have 100% of our vehicle fleet with a cleaner energy matrix by 2040. With the help of our partners, we will act consciously and efficiently, in addition to driving a major transformation in the logistics sector and generating positive impact on the environment,” said Hélio José Branco Matias, Director at Ambipar.
For Lorena Bruni, Purchasing Director for Latin America at Dow, the initiative reinforces the company’s commitment to advance in collaborative actions and partnerships focused on sustainability goals by 2050: achieving carbon neutrality and eliminating materials such as waste. “Collaboration is the only way to address complex issues and this partnership with Ambipar will directly impact scope 3 emissions generated by our customers and linked to the company’s operations, which are the most challenging to map and reduce,” she said.
“These trucks will be used on the transport routes between Dow and Whirpool, but the expectation is to expand the use of CNG-powered vehicles for the transport of goods between Dow and Whirpool. Dow and other customers,” commented Ronaldo Gewehr, Logistics Director for Latin America at Dow.
“Since we made the commitment to lead the transformation to a more sustainable transport system in 2016, we have been looking for partners who are on this same journey. Ambipar is proudly one of them, and is part of a select group that engraves its name in the history of cargo transport for the singular purpose of making the planet less polluted and dependent on diesel. Ambipar’s concern with sustainability and vision of the future, based on the feasibility of concrete data, is notorious, choosing our solution that will bring many benefits to its operation and its customers”, explained Silvio Munhoz, General Director of Commercial Operations at Scania Brazil. “Scania’s gas solution is a viable reality in Brazil. We continue with bold goals and have already sold more than 600 units. The interest grows every day.”
The implementation of the Sustainable Corridor Project is the result of a study carried out in 2021 by Ambipar. The inventory of GHG emissions indicated that the logistics activity was a major source of emissions in the company. Thus, last year, the company revisited its management strategy to increase the efficiency of the logistics chain, improving processes, indicators, and actions to improve operations and adopting new technologies. This action contributes to the company’s objective of reducing its emissions by 50% by 2030.
The Sustainable Corridor project is strategic for Ambipar to increase the share of logistics services in achieving SDG 12 (Responsible Production and Consumption) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), in line with the company’s ambition by 2030.
Institutionally, the project contributes to the goals of the Net Zero Movement of Rede Brasil do Pacto Global and the Net Zero platform of CEBDS and WBCSD, in which the company is an ambassador and founding partner, respectively. In addition, the project generates fundamental knowledge so that new low-emission routes can be implemented, stimulating the circular economy in the country and preserving the planet for future generations.
