Nestlé Chile announced the incorporation of 30 IVECO LNG-powered trucks, which will be driven by women, under an innovative labor inclusion program with a gender perspective. The initiative, which is the result of an alliance of Nestlé Chile with Grupo San Gabriel and Lipigas, will mean a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and will allow a journey with a range of up to 1,400 kilometers on Route 5 South.
LNG is a fuel that reduces CO2 emissions by 20% and eliminates 96% of solid particle emissions. In addition, natural gas trucks contribute to a considerable reduction in noise pollution. These are some of the benefits that motivated Nestlé Chile to launch a new sustainable fleet of LNG trucks, the largest to circulate in Chile.
“At Nestlé we are constantly looking for associative and regenerative projects that seek a positive impact on the environment, in line with our purpose of developing all the power of food to improve the quality of life, today and for future generations, so we are very happy to take this important step that will have a positive impact on our planet and the communities where we operate,” said Peter Weber, Director of Supply Chain of Nestlé Chile.
This truck fleet is part of the company’s commitment to its sustainable development strategy, which seeks to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout its value chain. In this sense, Nestlé works to create a cleaner and more efficient logistics network, whether in the optimization of routes, efficiency in loading transport cargo and through suppliers that use low-emission fuels. In this line, since 2021, Nestlé Chile entered the world of electromobility incorporating nine electric trucks to its operations.
According to data from the Ministry of the Environment, the transport sector is responsible for 36.6% of the country’s energy consumption, of which 99% corresponds to sources derived from oil, making it responsible for about 25.5% of the total Chile’s GHG emissions. Against this background, migration to environmentally friendly fuels is promoted, in line with Nestlé Chile’s ambition to reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
“The objectives to contribute to decarbonization are achieved by working together with companies that share an action plan to generate sustainable changes. For this reason, our alliance with Nestlé is very important, since it has the same parameters as Grupo San Gabriel, being a company willing to make substantial changes in terms of CO2 reduction, as well as creating jobs for women. We are extremely proud to be a disruptive company and to be contributing, together with Nestlé and our partners Lipigas and IVECO, to the great sustainable change in logistics in Chile,” said Sebastián Calderón, Corporate Manager of Grupo San Gabriel.
For his part, Esteban Rodríguez, Manager of Green Hydrogen, Biofuels and LNG at Lipigas, commented: “We are promoting the use of LNG in cargo transport, that is why we celebrate Nestlé’s commitment that today joins this type of transport with fewer emissions. In addition to our first LNG filling station in Linares, a new one will soon be added in the Valparaíso Region. With this, we continue to advance in the objective of enabling a green corridor for clean transport with LNG from north to south.”
