Nigeria: Lagos public transport authority pilots CNG buses

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has launched a pilot phase, whose service will deploy 10 high occupancy vehicles powered by natural gas on Marina/CMS to Lekki and Ajah-Epe routes. This number will progressively increase to 100, after data proves the sustainability of the adoption of CNG.

The X15N is the first natural gas engine to be specifically designed for heavy-duty truck applications with up to 500 horsepower output. PACCAR, Cummins and several customers including FedEx Freight and Knight-Swift will demonstrate the ability to achieve lower carbon emissions for long-haul transport using internal combustion engine technology.

The measure is part of Italy’s strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to increase its share of renewable energies. It will also contribute to the objectives of the REPowerEU Plan to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels and fast forward the green transition. The scheme notified by Italy, which will run until 30 June 2026, will be partly funded by the RRF.
