The Urban Logistics Operational Management of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, together with the Low Emissions Coordination, carried out a study to evaluate the operation of a CNG-powered public waste collection service truck, with the objective of move towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly freight transportation. Specifically, between 2021 and 2023, the technical, operational, economic and environmental feasibility of this technology was analyzed under real operating conditions of the Scania vehicle, which belongs to CLIBA.
“The future of transportation in the city of Buenos Aires is taking a very important step towards sustainability and energy efficiency. In a joint effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, we conducted an assessment that marked a significant milestone on the path to a cleaner transportation system: the real-world operational test of a CNG-powered waste collection truck,” the city government reported in a statement.
This type of study is crucial to know how to address the mission of reducing emissions and improving the city’s air quality. With a look toward the future, “Management is committed to intensifying evaluations to understand and publicize new, more environmentally friendly technologies in logistics vehicles,” they explained.
“This is just the beginning of a committed journey towards the creation of an urban logistics system that significantly improves the quality of life of all residents of the city of Buenos Aires,” they added.
In the Argentine capital, the transportation sector is responsible for approximately 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. Only logistical mobility, which is responsible for ensuring that the merchandise reaches the neighborhood and also for collecting waste, generates 7.4% of the total. This is a fundamental niche in which to explore new cleaner and more sustainable energy alternatives.
